Section Description

Public Health is a dynamic and exciting field of study encompassing a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. This course is an introductory investigation of public health exposing students to the history and main principles and practices of public health and its societal and population significance. Throughout the semester, students will consider the basic elements that determine the health of populations and be challenged to question their views of health and what produces health in the US. Emphasis will be on the functions of public health, specific health issues that impact the health of the population and a comprehensive overview and examination of the social determinants of health and health equity.

Evaluation

There will be short chapter quizzes, case studies and a final advocacy project based on a public health issue of interest to each student.
