Statistics and social justice is intended for students without previous background in statistics. You will be introduced to statistical reasoning, including applications to current scientific/social issues, with special focus on issues of poverty, criminal justice, environmental justice, and voting, and impact on diverse and disadvantaged populations. The course learning objectives are: • Summarize categorical and numerical variables and examine relationships between them using analytical, graphical, and tabular summaries. •Interpret data, solve problems, and draw conclusions from data presented in a variety of ways, including analytical, graphical, and tabular, and communicate the thought processes involved. •Interpret confidence intervals and the results of hypothesis tests effectively and in context. •Recognize the strengths and limitations of data collection methods and evaluate what conclusions can be supported based on the design of a study. •Identify social justice and diversity-related issues and think critically about their impacts on individuals and communities. •Use statistics to analyze arguments and debates including multiple perspectives to better social justice issues. •Understand and contextualize concepts related to social justice and the diversity of the human experience. NO CREDIT CAN BE EARNED FOR CEMS STUDENT AFTER THE FIRST YEAR. NO CREDIT CAN BE EARNED BY STUDENTS WHO ALREADY EARNED CREDIT FOR STAT 051 or STAT 052 IN THE OLD COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM.
