  • film screening: CURED
    6:30pm - 8:30pm
    Sullivan Classroom Med Ed 200

The Gender & Sexuality Alliance at the UVM Larner College of Medicine in collaboration with the American Psychiatric Association Foundation invites you to a screening of CURED, an Emmy-nominated documentary that highlights a pivotal but little-known moment in LGBTQ and medical history when activists and psychiatrists challenged a formidable institution — and won a crucial victory in the modern movement for LGBTQ equality and dignity.

Described as “fascinating” (Hollywood Reporter), “riveting” (The Queer Review), “timely and urgent” (Cinerama Film), and “one of the best documentaries of this or any year” (British Film Institute) — and the recipient of more than 20 awards and accolades — CURED takes viewers inside the David-versus-Goliath battle that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove the diagnosis of homosexuality from the DSM in 1973. Watch the trailer for the film.<http://cureddocumentary.com/>

This moment of depathologization marked a crucial paradigm shift in the history of medicine; fifty years later, we have an opportunity to reflect on what has changed — and to shine a spotlight on the ongoing disparities in health care that affect members of the LGBTQ community.

  • A Political History of the Dyke March (virtual)
    8:00pm - 9:00pm

A Political History of the Dyke March in the US is a virtual class taught by Professor Sara Angevine as a part of Queer University.

The Damn Lesbians, a San-Francisco group largely unknown, came together in one member’s basement to create an alternative to the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. Interested in decentering gay men and resisting capitalism, they partnered with the Lesbian Avengers and the ACT UP Women’s Caucus to create the official Dyke March route in Washington DC. The organizers expected roughly 1000 people to attend the March (“We only brought one bullhorn”) but over 20,000 self-proclaimed “dykes” showed up, seeding the Dyke March political resistance across the country for decades. This class will offer students insight on the origins of the Dyke March, the growth of Dyke Marches across the United States, and some of the critical queer event spin-offs, such as Dyke Day in Los Angeles and the Trans March in San Francisco.
