Green Hills Preserve Forest Adaptation

Description: The Green Hills Preserve Forest Adaptation project is focused on increasing tree species diversity and forest complexity to promote climate resilience, diverse wildlife habitat, and forest carbon sequestration and storage while providing sustainable forest products. Spongy moth, beech bark scale disease, beech leaf disease, and hemlock wooly adelgid are either currently affecting the site or anticipated to in the near term. This site includes a long-term experimental area developed in partnership with the University of Vermont.

Bluffside Farm Ash Preservation Demonstration Site

Description: VLT treated a preservation patch of seven white ash trees, 5 females and 2 males, on the Bluffside Farm in Newport VT. The trees were first treated in 2022 and then again in 2025 with emamectin benzoate to protect them from the Emerald Ash Borer. They will be treated every 3 years to preserve genetic diversity and protect seed trees for future ash regeneration. They are the northernmost patch in a network of ash preservation patches in Vermont.

Bud SAPNE Demo Site 1.jpg

Bud Leavitt WMA SAP-NE Demo Site

Description: Treatments applied are for the purpose of regenerating new age cohorts of ash and protecting them from EAB. There has been invasive plant control, silviculture, brown ash seed collection, and stem injections of pesticides to achieve this goal

Pratt Refuge Drone.JPG

Pratt Refuge Ash Preservation and Monitoring Demonstration Site

Description: Emerald ash borer threatens the long-term existence of all species of ash native to North America, including the Pratt Refuge, with less than 7% of the property's basal area belonging to white ash. In the summer of 2022, 20 white ash trees (10 male, 10 female) were injected with emamectin benzoate and then treated again in 2025 to preserve genetic diversity and protect seed trees for future ash regeneration. Starting in 2025, 40 white ash trees will be monitored annually for signs of EAB and tree health using the Monitoring and Managing Ash (MaMA) protocol in order to identify lingering ash.
