Conversations with Colleagues: Teaching with Compassion (Cancelled)

Friday, April 3, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Free

How do we teach with compassion in the remote learning environment?

Discussion facilitated by Jen Garrett-Ostermiller and Annie Murray-Close.

In the move to remote teaching, a common theme expressed among administrators and faculty is the need to teach with compassion and flexibility. Like us, many of our students are adjusting to a new learning environment, relying on unfamiliar instructional technologies, and potentially facing new stressors related to access (e.g., computer and internet availability), illness, caregiving responsibilities, and financial pressures. In this context, what does it mean to teach with compassion and flexibility? How might we teach with compassion while promoting student learning? In this session, we will draw on the collective wisdom of our colleagues to consider these questions.

In anticipation of this conversation, we suggest reading/skimming these articles:

We will uphold these principles during the session:

  • Respect confidentiality
  • Demonstrate an attitude of care
  • Ground comments in evidence as much as possible
  • Focus on productive change and solving problems

Please also Download and Install Teams in advance of the session.

The day before your workshop, you will receive communication from the CTL with information about how to join and participate in this event.
