Designing Writing for Disciplinary Learning

The WID Institute offers you a chance to step back from your normal routine to focus on how writing can work in your courses and enhance student learning. This multiday program lets you focus on (re)designing a course with an eye on writing assignments that invite students to go deeper into your disciplines. We will consider how your writing experiences might inform your teaching, and look at how work in writing studies supports your most important disciplinary values and concepts.

Our four-day institute will address topics such as:

  • Scaffolding assignments and other course activities
  • Connecting reading, writing, and course expectations
  • Assessing and responding to writing
  • Developing as teachers and writers

Participants will:

  • Design assignment sequences to incorporate into their syllabus
  • Learn from and with colleagues who are innovative teachers
  • Receive priority to participate in the WID Undergraduate Mentor Program, which attaches experienced undergraduate writing tutors to writing-intensive courses for majors
  • Be eligible to apply for a course-implementation grant

Registration

To register, complete the WID Institute Registration Form by April 29th. Although we do our best to accommodate all interested faculty, spaces are limited. In the event that there are more interested faculty than spaces, we will use your responses to assist us in forming a balanced group. Questions? Contact wid@uvm.edu.

The WID Institute will be facilitated by Susanmarie Harrington, Director of the Writing in the Disciplines Program.
