Book Group Series
Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty

Thursday, September 12, 2019 @ 10:30 am

This book group will meet four Thursdays in the Fall semester. (see details below)

book cover: Cheating Lessons by James M. LangJames Lang’s book, Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty, is a powerful resource for any teacher. The premise of the text is that since people cheat due to environmental conditions, instructors can design learning environments that dissuade academic dishonesty. More importantly, the conditions that deter cheating (a sense of intrinsic motivation, mastery-focused learning, lowered stakes, and self-efficacy) are the very same conditions that promote deep learning.

Despite self-reports by college students that cheating is commonplace, when courses and assignments are designed carefully, students will not only be compelled to academic honesty, but they will also learn more.
