High School Teams

High school teams are groups of 1 teacher and 2 students.

  • The Streams Project offers two opportunities to interested high school teams. Teams may either:

    • Sample streams close to their schools. In the fall, teams that participate in stream sampling are responsible for sampling two stream sites twice-monthly through the summer and fall months.

    •
    • Participate in data analysis and modeling by using the data produced through the Streams Project community. Teams that focus on data analysis work at computers with specialized software (see the "What We Measure" section for more info).

  • What is the time commitment for High School Teams?

    • Each team is taught the skills necessary to participate in the Streams Project during the week of June 28 - July 2, 2009 (2010 dates TBD). Equipment and supplies necessary to continue the project over the summer and academic year are provided at the start of the project. Participants will present their results at a Research Symposium in spring 2010 at UVM. The training week and symposium are required elements of participation. Ideally, we are looking for a 3-year commitment from the teachers/schools involved in this study but welcome participants for a year.

  • What are the benefits to High School Students?

    • This experience will provide students and teachers invaluable insight into the professional world of streams science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The teams not only learn cutting edge techniques used in specific areas of STEM, they also understand how a research team functions and experience first-hand the scientific process.

  • How do I apply to participate?

    • Please keep checking our website for application dates and deadlines. Brochures are sent to Vermont High Schools in late fall, and applications are accepted in the spring for the following summer and school year.
