Staff Council News

Staff Council will meet next on Tuesday, 10/6/20 from 12:05-1:30. All members of the UVM community are welcome. The Microsoft Teams meeting link will be posted
on the front page of the Staff Council website prior to the meeting. Past meeting agendas, minutes, and video recordings are also available on our website.

Update from Stephen Lunna

As September came to an end, the resignation of Staff Council President Stephen Lunna went into effect (as noted in a previous Staffline, Caleb Gilbert and Laura Clayton have been appointed as President and Vice President of Staff Council, respectively). In his resignation letter, Steve had explained that juggling his Staff Council role with his work with housing veterans had become unfeasible. He recently shared some amazing news regarding this work:

Chittenden County has officially made the list of communities that have ended veteran homelessness.

A press release from the Winooski Mayor's office details the work he's been engaged in for the past three years. The next steps for Steve and his team will be focused on bringing the rest of the state to the same level, and ending veteran homelessness statewide.

Congratulations to Steve and his colleagues, from all of us in Staff Council!

Staff Council Professional Development Fund

The 2nd quarter application period for the Staff Council Professional Development Fund (SCPDF) is OPEN until October 31st. Apply for funds to attend in-person or online training, conferences, or other professional development opportunities.

Holiday Bazaar
This year, we will not be having an in-person Staff Council Holiday Bazaar. However, the Social Committee is currently gauging interest in a virtual Bazaar. Would you be interested in being a participating vendor in an online version of the Bazaar? Help the Social Committee plan for the holiday season by taking this quick survey.

External Training and Development
During this unprecedented year, many departments have temporarily stopped providing funding for professional development opportunities for staff. With that in mind, this new section of Staffline will highlight external opportunities for training and development. We'll feature primarily free events, but will also sometimes include others which have a cost, with a friendly reminder that you could potentially apply for the Staff Council Professional Development Fund to pay for it (the next deadline is Halloween!).

To suggest external opportunities for us to feature, drop us a line at staff.council@uvm.edu.

Racial Justice in the Vermont Food System - Panel and Discussion
On September 29th, a panel and discussion on racial justice in Vermont's food system was presented as a virtual webinar by the Susu Healing Collective with support from the UVM Extension Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Many of Vermont’s food system organizations--from farmland access to food access--would like to address racial justice in the food system, but some are just getting into this space for the first time. There has not yet been a statewide discussion on how to move Vermont towards a racially just food system. This webinar brought together facilitators Naomi Doe Moody and Amber Skye Arnold of the Susu Healing Collective and a panel of People of Color who are part of Vermont’s farm and food system to discuss what is needed to address racial inequities and injustice - and to work towards a just and thriving system for all.

Watch the recorded webinar.

Virtual Dinner & Dialogue
DINNER & DIALOGUE: What is Freedom?
Thurs Oct 15 @ 7pm, Online, FREE

In the midst of a pandemic, political elections, and social upheaval, we are being challenged to examine what it means to live as a civil society. How do you understand freedom from your own religious and/or philosophical perspective? Dinner & Dialogue is an annual, six-part series that invites students, staff, faculty, and members of the Burlington community to explore our own core values in conversation with others. Each month we will explore and discuss one of the five basic freedoms found in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. October’s conversation invites us to explore how we understand the freedom of religion in our society.  Learn more or RSVP for this event.

Local Motion logo
UVM Transportation and Parking Services would like to encourage you to join Local Motion for an online Streets & Sweets bike safety workshop on Thursday October 1st, 7-8 PM. Their bike experts will give you some tips on how to stay safe while riding your bike on the street and in the neighborhood, answer your questions about the rules of the road (the police are stepping up enforcement on people who blow stop signs, or don't have lights at night - which comes with a double-digit fine), and give you useful pointers on how to avoid the common bike theft pitfalls. Get a FREE scoop coupon for Ben & Jerry’s and a free set of bike lights - all you have to do is show up (and stick around)! Register here.
