Computers and Electronic Wastes
Old computers, CRT’s,
monitors, and similar electronics contain toxic and heavy metals. These
items are prohibited from disposal in landfills and in conventional
scrap metal facilities. All electronic waste or "e-waste" must be handled by UVM Recycling. Do not throw old
computers in the trash. Submit a Physical
Plant Service Request to have these
items picked up. Departments are charged a
nominal pick-up fee for this service. Departments are required to remove all data and software from computers prior to pickup. Click Here for erase instructions from UVM Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) on how to sufficiently erase your computer's harddrive. (You will need at UVM netid to log in to this site).
Old computers are sent to a certified electronics recycling company located in Middlebury, Vermont (Good Point Recycling). The company takes the computers apart, separating compoments such as metals, plastics, glass, capacitors, circuit boards and related hazardous items, and then recycles each component.
