Public universities are characterized by a responsibility to create knowledge and seek its application to the public benefit. Research and the generation of knowledge are already interwoven into the fabric of our society, enhancing education and healthcare and providing innovative technologies that enhance our quality of life and support a prosperous community. That creative process also attracts the most able faculty and enriches the education of our students. It is essentially what distinguishes universities from teaching institutions . As an excellent research institution, the U niversity provides a competitive and relevant academic experience. Thus, as we look forward with the strategic financial plan in mind, the question is not whether research is an important part of our future, but what level of research growth should we anticipate and in what areas? This will be a complex and on-going analysis, but the purpose of this paper is to provide background and context to the Board of Trustees for that process.
