Rachel K. Johnson
Rachel K. Johnson, Ph.D., is the Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, Professor of Nutrition and Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont. Dr. Johnson holds a Ph.D. and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from the Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Hawaii. She completed a dietetic internship at the Indiana University Medical Center and is a Registered Dietitian. Dr. Johnson served as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Vermont from 2001-2008. Dr. Johnson's research expertise covers national nutrition policy, pediatric nutrition and obesity, dietary intake methodology and energy metabolism. She has published numerous scholarly papers and book chapters on those and other topics. Dr. Johnson was named a distinguished University of Vermont Scholar in 2003 and received an Outstanding Alumni Award from the Pennsylvania State University in 2004. Dr. Johnson has served on the Board of Editors for the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Nutrition Today, and the Nutrition Bulletin. Dr. Johnson has served as Chair of the Commission on Dietetic Registration for the American Dietetic Association, on the Board of Directors for the ADA and is currently a member of the American Heart Association Nutrition Committee.
Dr. Johnson was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Surgeon General to the Year 2000 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. She served on the Panel on Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) for the macronutrients for the National Academy of Sciences / Institute of Medicine. Dr. Johnson was also a member of the Additives and Ingredients Subcommittee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Food Advisory Committee.
