Office of Institutional Research

John Ryan is the Director of Institutional Research. Prior to joining the office in March 2011, John served as Director of Assessment for the College of Education and Human Ecology and as Assistant Provost and Associate Director of Institutional Research and Planning at The Ohio State University, with prior experience in student affairs as well as fiscal and policy analysis for the Ohio Legislative Budget Office.

His publications and research interests have focused on the relationship between institutional expenditures, degree completion, and student engagement as well as principles and best practices in promoting institutional effectiveness and academic quality with publications in Research in Higher Education, Enrollment Management Journal, a forthcoming article in Higher Education, and a co-authored a chapter in the recent book edited by James Martin and James E. Samels, Turnaround: Leading Stressed Colleges and Universities to Excellence (Johns Hopkins University Press). Some of his current interests and work focus on innovation and decision support, the improvement and accountability divide, the cost-access-quality dilemma, factors that influence faculty satisfaction and retention, models of student learning and development, and fostering greater collaboration between student and academic affairs units to enhance student success.

He currently serves as a member of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) Publication Committee and as the Associate Editor of Assessment in the Disciplines, one of AIR's most popular publications. John has a bachelor's degree with honors and a master's degree in political science, both from from The Ohio State University, as well as a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
