December 2010 - Undergraduate Research at UVM

The Undergraduate Research Office, located in the Honors College on the first floor of University Heights North, had a busy fall helping students find research opportunities with faculty from across campus that will enrich their intellectual development and create collaborative efforts.

Students often think of research as following a timeline akin to their classes, but this is not the case. While there are definite tides that rise and fall with the semesters, the bulk of the faculty perform research perpetually. So the end the fall semester (and the beginning of the spring semester) is still a good time to come into the office and find a research placement. The Office of Undergraduate Research maintains a database of faculty interested in working with undergraduates on their research projects. It assists students in defining their interests and helps them find research placements in a variety of disciplines.

Funding for Undergraduate Research: Award Announcements
The Office also administered several grants that fund full-time students' research. Once students establish themselves in research environments, they are encouraged to apply for these research awards.

Mini Grants
Mini Grants are offered twice a year (Fall and Spring), fund approximately15 students and provide up to $500 for research expenses that may include everything from art, office, or lab supplies, mileage to/from project site, data entry, transcription, or translation. THE DEADLINE FOR SPRING 2011 MINI GRANTS IS: FEBRUARY 18, 2011

Fall 2010 Mini Grant recipients - Major, Title of Research (faculty sponsor):

UROP
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) funds Honors College students in faculty-mentored research projects across all disciplines. Since Honors College students complete a thesis, practicum or creative project in their senior year, this program covers unusual expenses not normally incurred over the course of a typical class (e.g. necessary research travel, scientific equipment not already in the lab, certain kinds of computer software, etc). Awarded three times each year (Fall, Spring -due February 11, 2011, and Summer -due May 13, 2011) these awards are for up to $300.

Congratulations Fall 2010 UROP recipients!

URECA!
One of our major awards, the Undergraduate Research Endeavors Competitve Awards (URECA!), awarded in the spring of each year provides students with $4000 towards their own research (up to $3000 for operating costs and a $1000 prize awarded directly to the student). THE DEADLINE FOR SPRING 2011 URECA! IS: FEBRUARY 7, 2011.

Spring Conferences
Dissemination of new and recent research is the hallmark of a complete scholar. In order for knowledge to expand it must be made public. We strongly encourage students to participate in local, regional, and national conferences and seek to publish their work. Just a few conferences that promote recent work done by our students include:

Student Research Conference: April 26, 2011
This year UVM's Student Research Conference, co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Graduate College, and the Honors College, will take place at the end of April. Undergraduate and graduate students who have been conducting research will present their results at this day-long event in the Davis Center.
