UVM African Studies Program Updates - 2011/2012
from Prof. Peter Von Doepp, Director
The African Studies Program was pleased to be involved in two events over the past few months. In October, we helped to welcome noted author Peter Godwin, who delivered a public lecture on his new book, The Fear, which chronicles the political decay of Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe. This was followed by a meet and greet among UVM African Studies faculty and students where we brainstormed about ideas for programming over the next few years.
More recently, we have welcomed a group of students from South Africa’s University of the Free State to UVM. Under the tutelage of
Professor Robert Gordon, these students are visiting our campus for two weeks in January, where they will explore and discuss issues of race and integration with members of the UVM community. Read more...

In the spring, we are looking forward to sponsoring cross-disciplinary programming on the Congo conflict. This will combine the efforts of faculty from History, Religion, Political Science, English and Anthropology.
