Getting Involved

Student Clubs and Organizations

High energy and commitment characterize every aspect of life at UVM. The Department of Student Life along with the Student Government Association keep UVM's student clubs and organizations running like well-oiled machines. Student Life considers these main categories of involvement:

two students chatting on campus

"There is an easy-going link between everyone in the streets of Burlington ...

It is unlike any other place I've ever been. Most of us have moved up here either to be different or make a difference, and what we've found are matched passions."Sarah, undergraduate student

Community service programs

Tutor at a prison, work with people whose second language is English, be a big buddy to a local child, and more. Chances to get involved with the Burlington community are plentiful.

How to get involved: Volunteer opportunities (Volunteers in Action, Alpha Phi Omega, residence hall service projects, and more) each have their own distinct contacts for getting involved. View contacts and more ways to engage on the Student Life website.

Campus Programs planning group

Plan events to laugh with comedians such as Dane Cook, Margaret Cho, Dave Chappelle; or rock with bands like Jurassic 5, Cake, The Roots. Bring other fun, high quality and diverse events to campus by getting involved.

How to get involved: Campus Programs plans in collaboration with student groups like the UVM Program Board and SA Concerts. Read more on the Student Life website.

Greek Life

Volunteering, formal events, organized fund raisers, camaraderie: Greek Life remains a proud tradition at UVM and attracts many students to its eight fraternities and five sororities.

How to get involved: Learn more on the Greek Life website.

Leadership

Find the leader within or flex your leadership muscles! Get energized on the six-day UVM leadership TREK, become an agent for change and attend the Next Step Social Justice retreat, or more.

How to get involved: Each leadership organization has its own contact information. Learn more on the Student Life website.

Media

Try your pen at journalism for The Vermont Cynic student newspaper; dabble in spinning CDs at WRUV 90.1 FM's student-run radio station; hone your on-air personality and T.V. skills on the UVMTv student-run station.

How to get involved: Contact the student media advisor, info on the Student Life website.

Outdoor programs

Need a beautiful setting? No problem. Vermont's natural playground encourages involvement in the Outing Club, Adventure Ropes Course or with a TREK (for new students).

How to get involved: Each outdoor organization has its own contact information. Learn who on the Student Life website.

Student Government Association recognized clubs

Aikido club, a cappella singing, dancing, canoeing, college republicans, student-run farms, service opportunities, media, even an Elvish language club. The Student Government Association's list of over 100 recognized student clubs is as varied as the students who join. View sports and clubs-at-a-glance (PDF).

How to get involved: Each club has a separate contact and can be learned on the SGA club website.

Intramurals and club sports

Maybe you make friends best by sweating with them: consider club sports through SGA and intramural sports or fitness programs through Campus Recreation.

How to get involved: Club sports are organized through the Student Government Association. Intramurals and fitness programs are organized through UVM Campus Recreation. Learn more about the options.
