Gund Graduate Fellow, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources

My name is Justin Dempsey and I am from Doylestown, Pennsylvania. I studied Political Economy at Union College, with a focus on the work of two Karl's (Marx and Polanyi). I received a MSc in Geography from University College London in a program titled Environment, Politics, and Society. I wrote my master's dissertation on Ecological Economics and the debate surrounding Ecosystem Service Valuations. I will be pursuing a doctorate in Natural Resources in the in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources under Professor Jon Erickson. Our research will examine place-based renewable power generation around Vermont incorporating the concept of an energyshed. I hope to pursue a career in education and Ecological Economics, in an effort to reframe the study of the political economy in a way that is considerate of Earth biophysical boundaries. Outside of academia I am a film nerd and sports fan who enjoys hiking and traveling.
