Preparing Your Computer for the UVM Network

It should meet these minimum* requirements:


Windows Macintosh
1 GHz or faster processor 1 GHz or faster processor
2 GB memory recommended for Windows Vista; minimum 1 GB (For Windows XP professional, 1 GB recommended; minimum 512 MB)
1 GB memory recommended; minimum 512 MB
Vista Business or Ultimate,
or Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3
(Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, XP Home Edition, Vista Home are not supported)
Mac OS X 10.5 recommended; minimum MacOS X 10.3.9 (OS 9 is not supported)
DVD/CD combo drive recommended; minimum writeable CD-ROM DVD/CD combo drive recommended; minimum writeable CD-ROM
Ethernet network port, with minimum 10/100 mbps capability
Ethernet network port, with minimum 10/100 mbps capability
Category 5, 5e, or 6 Ethernet cable
(minimum length 25 feet)

802.11 b/g wireless adapter recommended for laptops

*    A computer meeting minimum requirements won't be sufficient for your entire degree program; it should meet basic needs for the coming year.

Prepare your computer for the campus network


  1. You must install all security updates for your operating system. 
  2. Set your computer to install future updates automatically.
  3. Windows computers must have current virus protection.  Start by removing your current virus protection software.  Download and install virus protection software from www.uvm.edu/software.   Scan for viruses. 
  4. Be sure all accounts on your computer, especially Administrator, have good passwords. 
  5. Set your Web browser’s home page to myuvm.uvm.edu or  www.uvm.edu
  6. Install, configure, and test 802.11b/g wireless (Wi-Fi) hardware and software, if wanted, following instructions at www.uvm.edu/ets/wireless.  
  7. Download and install any other software you’d like to use from www.uvm.edu/software, such as:
    • Adobe Reader (required by Windows to read PDF)
    • Quicktime (required by Windows to play .mov and .mp4 video files)
    • Firefox (recommended browser for the Blackboard learning system)

When you arrive on campus, you’ll plug into the UVM network and register your computer.
