What is the Statistical Consulting Clinic (SCC)?

The SCC is a free service that offers statistical consultation and advice to the students and faculty of the University of Vermont. The goals of the SCC are to promote scientific collaboration between disciplines, enhance the quality of research at UVM, and improve the education of UVM students. The clinic is supported by UVM Libraries and the Statistics Program.

Director

Alan Howard is the director of the SCC. Alan has an M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Vermont (1980) and has worked in UVM's Academic Computing Services as a Statistical Computation Specialist since 1986. Before coming to UVM, he worked as a Statistician for Ayerst Laboratories, Inc., (currently known as Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) in Rouses Point, New York.

Personnel

The clinic is also a credit class (STAT 385) for graduate students in statistics and biostatistics. They are under the supervision of Alan Howard, with additional support provided by Jeff Buzas, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Mathematics & Statistics. Consulting sessions may be attended by one or more graduate students in addition to Alan and Jeff (when he is available).

Guidelines and Policies

Although we will try to help you at all stages of your research, we encourage you to contact us at the beginning of your research for assistance with data collection, experimental design, and sample-size calculations.

Appointments are made by completing the online "Request for Assistance Form". Consultations typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. Follow-up consultations are usually necessary.

The SCC provides applied statistical consulting, but the personnel of the SCC should not be considered research assistants. For example, we will not perform data entry or perform mass production of graphs and tables. However, we will attempt to assist you in creating examples of what are needed. This service is provided free of charge to UVM students, faculty, and staff who are not otherwise covered by grant funding for statistical support.
