CIT Services

Services provided by Computing & Information Technology are available to students, faculty and staff members throughout the University. Additionally, departments and organizations at UVM may provide separate services specific to their missions.

Among our more widely used services, you'll find the following:

  • Email
  • Mailing Lists (LISTSERV)
    Mailing Lists are a means of distributing information to defined lists of users via email. Lists often are used as forums for the discussion of special topics.

  • Calendar Services
    for shared electronic scheduling and calendaring (faculty and staff only)
  • File sharing
  • Computer Management
    Enhanced LAN Services (eLAN) is a developing service which now provides application distribution, desktop remote control, and desktop environment management for Microsoft Windows computers.  Traditional file and print services are available for Windows and Macintosh clients.
  • Thin-Client Application Access (Citrix ICA)
    Citrix ICA provides cross-platform access to selected administrative Windows applications for people both on and off campus.
  • Computing Facilities
    provide access to computers and standard software at locations across campus
  • zoo.uvm.edu
    Many computing services at UVM are provided by a cluster of UNIX-based systems known as "Zoo". The many services hosted by Zoo include: Email, file storage, FTP services, programming environments, statistical software, mathematical software, and GIS applications programs.
  • Computer and Software Sales and Service
    The Computer Depot offers sales and service to UVM affiliates
  • Streaming Media Servers
    Serve and view streaming audio and video via the web using QuickTime or RealPlayer
  • mySQL Database Server
    UVM's central UNIX servers provide mySQL support for UVM Web developers wishing to integrate database functionality like shopping carts or other dynamic content to their site via PHP. MySQL is a fast, robust, Open Source, relational database management system.
  • Consultation Services for Teaching, Learning, or Research
    The staff of Academic Computing Services serves as information technology consultants for faculty and students at UVM, and to that end we are closely tied to the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Doctor is In program. Our small staff's expertise includes statistics, computer programming, instructional technology, electronic texts, and multimedia. We are funded through the University's general fund, so we are available at no cost to you or your department — feel free to pick our brains.
  • WebCT Course Management Server
    WebCT's strategy is to deliver the best-of-breed learning tools, robust content management capabilities, dynamic learning information management, enhanced learning personalization, enterprise-class architecture, and strategic implementation services that institutions will need to compete effectively, today and years from now.
  • Multimedia Development Support
    The Center for Multimedia Development, at Media Resources in Bailey/Howe Library, offers computers, software, and advanced editing systems for images, video, and audio.
  • Support for Business Software Systems and the operational offices that use them.
    • Our department of Administrative Information Systems supports operational offices in their use of Business Information Systems. Together with CIT's Technical Support group we are responsible for installing hardware and software, providing tools used to access these systems, maintaining and upgrading these systems, and troubleshooting problems and defects.
    • Our primary clients are: Office of the Registrar; Office of Admissions and Financial aid; Controller's Office; Financial Analysis and Budgeting; Telecommunications, and the Human Resources Department. We also provide some programming support to Orientation, Graduate Admissions, the ACCESS program, and Career Services. And we run an ORACLE infrastructure supporting Facilities Management, Time Reporting, Imaging, and Room Scheduling systems.
