Consumer's Guide to Information Technology

for

Prospective Students, Parents and Families

Interested in learning more
about the information technology environment at the University of Vermont?

These pages are designed to help prospective students and their parents evaluate the use of information technology in campus life. The questions were developed by EDUCAUSE to help you compare the technology offerings of participating colleges and universities.

The Academic Experience: Information technology has become a critical element of the teaching and learning process. Using technology in teaching and learning is an intriguing complement to traditional methods -- it can improve communication, let you work at your own pace, and provide access to course materials any time, any place.

The Administrative Experience.: Online course registration, schedule changes, grades, account information, book purchases and other transactions are a refreshing alternative to the days of waiting in lines.

The Social Experience: If you use e-mail, chat rooms, or Instant Messenger (IM), you already know how important technology can be as a social medium. Campus groups also use the Web and e-mail for planning, publicity, and fun.

Requirements, Services & Costs: Whether you buy a computer from UVM, bring your own, or rely solely upon computer labs, you'll need to know what to expect in the way of services, and you'll want to make sure your system will work well on the campus network.
