INB
INB: Internet-Native Banner
INB is the latest addition to the Banner access family, and appears to be the
method under heaviest development at SCT. INB has the advantage of being
extremely easy to install, and it can be used from any computer with an Internet
connection and a modern web-browser. INB works well over DSL and
Cable-modem connections. For these reasons, we currently recommend INB as
the current "preferred Banner access method".
The following Operating System/Web
Browser combinations have been tested and approved for use with INB by ETS:
- Windows 98/2000/XP with Internet Explorer 5.5+
- Macintosh OS X (10.2) with Internet Explorer 5.2 - Java 1.4.1 update (or
better) highly recommended!
- Macintosh OS X (10.2) with Netscape 7.02 - Java 1.4.1 update (or better)
highly recommended!
The following platforms are NOT certified and are known to have problems with
INB:
- Macintosh OS 9.2.1 or earlier
- Windows 98/2000/XP with Netscape 6+
- Start Internet Explorer and go to http://www.uvm.edu/banner/
- A "Security Warning" Dialog will appear asking if you wish to install
"Oracle JInitiator". Answer "Yes":

-You will only need to install JInitiator once. Each subsequent visit to http://www.uvm.edu/banner/
will take you directly to the Banner login dialog.
-On occasion, there
may be upgrades to JInitiator. If this happens, you will be prompted to
re-install JInitiator. All you have to do is answer "Yes", as indicated
in step 3.
- You will be prompted to install JInitiator. Answer "Yes":

The "Oracle JInitiator" installer will run. Accept all defaults
during the installation routine. (If installation of JInitiator fails,
you should close download and install it as a separate step. The
JInitiator installer can be downloaded from:
https://aisweb.uvm.edu/jinitiator/us/jinit_download.htm)
- When installation has completed, you
will be returned to your browser. Internet-Native Banner then will spawn
in a separate window:

- Log in and use Banner! Please Note: You must not close
the original web browser window that spawned your Banner session. If you
close this browser window, your Banner session will terminate!
INB will work with Netscape 6, 7, and other Windows-based browsers, but the
installation of JInitiator will not occur automatically. It is recommended
that you use Internet Explorer as the browser from which to launch INB, but if
you cannot or will not use Internet Explorer, then you can launch from Netscape
6+ after following these instructions:
- Download and install JInitiator from the following URL:
https://aisweb.uvm.edu/jinitiator/us/jinit_download.htm
Alternatively, you can install JInitiator by following steps 1-3 of the
Windows Internet Explorer instructions.
-
-On your local hard drive, locate the directory:
"C:\Program Files\Oracle\Jinitiator <xxxxx>\bin" (where <xxxxx> represents the JInitiator version number).
-Copy the file named "NPJinit-<xxxxx>.dll" (again, <xxxxx> represents the current version number).
-Paste the "NPJinit-<xxxxx>.dll" to the following directory:
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Plugins" (the path to the Netscape plugin directory may vary with different versions of Netscape).
-
Start Netscape and go to http://www.uvm.edu/banner/. As in step 5 of the Windows Internet Explorer instructions, the Banner program will spawn in a separate window.
- If using Internet Explorer as your browser, you must enable Java support
(Java is enabled by default when using Netscape 6+. If you are using
Netscape, skip to step 2):
-Start Internet Explorer, go to the Explorer->Preferences menu:

-Under the "Web Browser->Java heading, select "Enable Java", then click okay:
- Go to http://www.uvm.edu/banner/
. After a few seconds you will be prompted with a Java security warning:

Despite the dire-sounding warning, it is safe to click "Grant Always" at
this point..
- The Java Banner application will now load on your system. In
another few seconds you will be prompted with the familiar Banner login
screen:

Login, and have fun!
INB should run on any operating system with an Internet connection
and a Web browser with Java 1.1.8+ plugin support. For example, a
RedHat Linux 8.0 system running Mozilla 1.0.2/Sun Java 1.4.1 plugin has
been demonstrated to run INB quite effectively. These
configurations currently are not supported by ETS, but if it works for
you please feel free to use it!
