Publisher Tools

Note: Support for publisher tools is limited, since these materials and activities are hosted and maintained on the Publisher's systems, and thus out of UVM's control. With this in mind, instructors are encouraged to work with their publisher's representatives to set up their textbooks well in advance of their course start date, so that technical issues can be resolved before the term begins.

You can now connect your course to content provided by a number of textbook publishers, including:

  • Cengage
  • Pearson
  • McGraw-Hill
  • Wiley
  • Acrobatiq
  • Norton
  • Sapling (Macmillan)
  • Macmillan

These tools let students access readings and exercises. Results from these textbook assessments can also be synced with your course grade center.

Textbook tools can be linked from the course menu, or you can create a link within a content area. In order to use the tools, you first need to turn them on:

  1. In your course, go to Control Panel -> Customization -> Tool Availability
  2. Locate the publisher tools you want to use in your course (contact your publisher representative to find out what they have to offer).
  3. Check the boxes next to the tools you want to use in your course, and click submit. Note: Some publisher tools use something called LTI, in which case that option will need to be checked in this screen. These types of tools are most often added as Web Links in your course. Ask your publisher if your textbook tool needs LTI to be enabled.

Adding the tool to your course can be done via the course menu:

  1. Click the “+” button at the top of the course menu.
  2. Click “Tools”.
  3. Enter a name for the link, select the publisher tool you want to link to, and check the box to make it available to students.

It can also be added by placing it in a content area:

  1. Go into the content area where you’d like to create the link
  2. Click on the Tools button, then click “More Tools >>”
  3. Click on the link to the desired publisher tool

Once the link is created in the course, you’ll need to follow the publisher’s instructions to complete the process. Your publisher’s sales representative will be able to provide you with these details.
