Dr. Ted James, M.D., Named Director of Clinical Simulation

The UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care announce the appointment of Ted James, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery and Attending Oncology Surgeon, as Director of Clinical Simulation, effective July 1, 2012.

The Clinical Simulation Laboratory is jointly supported by the UVM College of Medicine, the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Fletcher Allen Health Care. As Clinical Director, Dr. James will provide administrative and academic leadership for the collaborative, interprofessional, state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Laboratory, promoting health professions education through simulation throughout UVM, Fletcher Allen Health Care and the community.

Since joining UVM/Fletcher Allen in 2005, Dr. James has been actively engaged in the development of clinical simulation activities and other innovative educational initiatives. He has held a number of education leadership roles including Surgery Clerkship Director, and Director of both the Surgery Senior Major and Surgery Scholarly Programs. He is an accreditation surveyor for simulation centers through the Accredited Education Institute, and for the last few years has surveyed many of the simulation centers in the North East and Canada. He has also served on a number of national committees dedicated to medical student education, simulation, and patient safety.

 Dr. James has a history of successful interprofessional collaboration, partnering with physician and nursing faculty, technologists, physician assistants, and residents, to develop and successfully implement innovative and effective education programs. He and colleague Celia Cohen, R.N., M.S.N., an educator in Central Nursing and Research Education at Fletcher Allen Health Care, earned a 2011 Frymoyer Scholarship for their collaborative educational research initiative using inter-professional training, simulation, team training and communication to impart skills to optimize clinical care and reduce medical error.

After earning his medical degree at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, Dr. James completed his general surgery residency at North Shore University Hospital/NYU School of Medicine, followed by a surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He also completed a surgery research fellowship at the Boas-Marks Biomedical Science Research Center at North Shore University Hospital, and a recent educational research fellowship with the Association for Surgical Education. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Health Care Management at Harvard University.

Dr. James is a dedicated health care educator with a track record of success in educational research, external grants, mentorship and faculty development in education. He will work in collaboration with Cate Nicholas, Ed.D., M.S., P.A., Education Director of the Clinical Simulation Laboratory, and  report operationally to William Jeffries, Ph.D., Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education.
