First Year Course samples
Your first year in CALS
As students choose a University or College, it is helpful to picture
what the first
year courses might look like.
An example of what makes CALS outstanding is that Foundation courses, taken during their first year,
help students transition from high school to college. Moreover, these Foundation courses form a strong base
of public speaking and information technology competencies that are a key to success at UVM and beyond.
In addition, most majors have an introductory course or colloquium the
first
semester that gives an overview of their major. This overview helps
students determine / reaffirm whether the major is a good match for the
students, and as a compass to direct students to the career possibilities in their field. Other courses suggested for the first year are prerequisites to higher level courses in the major. Filling these prerequisites as a
first-year student opens the doors to more focused courses in the
major, internships, study abroad, research and other opportunities as
students advance in their scholastic career.
The following sample schedules are only suggestions. Meeting regularly
with an advisor is the best way for students to make the most of their schedule during
their years at UVM. For more information about creating a
first-year schedule, contact an advisor in your prospective major or Ja Yun Lee in the Student Services Office.
