TUTORIAL (5-10 minutes)

The "Gene Database" provides a quick overview of any gene, with a summary of information on the gene, links to the base sequence of the gene, amino acid sequence of the gene product, references, OMIM and many other NCBI databases.

To begin this tutorial, go to the NCBI home page. Type "delta globin" into the search box. On the pull-down menu, select the "Gene" database (not the "Genome" database!). Click on the "Go"" button.

When the results of  the search are displayed, there should be a link to "HBD", the gene for human delta-globin. Click on this link. A screen on human delta globin should appear which looks like this.

HBD Summary. This section of the screen shows:
  1. Links to records on delta globin in similar data bases.
  2. The complete taxonomic lineage of humans, including all sub-taxa.
  3. A brief overview of the genomics, molecular biology and biochemistry of the gene.

HBD Gene and Genomic Information. This section of the screen shows:.
  1. A link to the protein database with the amino acid sequence of the protein. A link to the base sequence of the delta globin gene is at the left end of the graphic.
  2. The introns, exons, and untranslated regions (UTR) of the messenger RNA.
  3. The cytogenetic locus of the gene.
  4. Genomic information. In this section of sequenced DNA, the locus of the delta globin gene is shown in relation to the loci of 4 other genes. The bases in the DNA are numbered from left to right in the 5' --> 3' direction.
    • How long is this segment of DNA?
    • What does the arrow signify?

HBD Bibliography. This section of the screen shows some RIFs (References into Function). Note that these references are useful, but certainly not an exhaustive list!
