Schedule by week:
UNIT ONE: various readings
- Aug. 28, 30, Sept. 1
- Primary Reading: Read up to the "catalog of ships" (you will
know when you get to it: it's a long list of what city sent what ships
under whose command) in Iliad Book
2 online text. Pay special attention to what Thersites says and
what happens when he speaks.
- Secondary Reading:
Stuurman's
article about
the origins of ideas of equality in Greece (Siep Stuurman, "The Voice
of Thersites: Reflections on the Origins of the Idea of Equality," Journal of the History of Ideas 65.2,
2004, 171-189). If the link does not work, use JSTOR on the library
website to find the article.
- Any of you who know little about Greece would be well-advised
to read the Encyclopedia Britannica article
"Ancient Greek
Civilization."
If the link does not work, go to the
UVM library website and find the Encyclopedia Britannica, then do a
search for "Ancient Greek Civilization." The
article is longish, but there is a lot to cover, and it does it
compendiously and well.
