I found this lesson plan titled Making Ends Meet through the Microsoft website... "In this real-life simulation, students create a monthly budget, showing income earned from an imaginary job versus estimated monthly expenses. They then encounter unexpected monthly expenses and must adjust their budget to compensate for those expenses. Finally, they write a report evaluating the activity and what they learned about 'making ends meet.'" It was listed as being most appropriate for middle school students but I think a variation could be used for older elementry school aged kids. http://www.microsoft.com/education/endsmeet.aspx |
Here's some of the other lesson plans my
classmates found... |

This lesson plan is appropriate for grades 3-5 and 6-8. It is designed to aid teachers in showing students introductory skills in Excel. The point of the lesson is for students to create a spreadsheet and graph about their opinions of fast food menu items. http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/techlp/techlp004.shtml |

This lesson is appropiate for elementary school, probably fourth grade. It is a project designed to be a fun way to learn about excel and collect class data. Within the lesson, each student counts the amount of each color m&m in a bag and then data is collected for the entire class and an average is recorded for the amount of each color m&m in one bag. A table and pie chart is made within this lesson. http://www.learningspace.org/tech/tech_skills/mandm.html |

I found an excel plan that students take a taste test of diffrent brands of one kind of food. The students list the data and have to find out which brand was more popular. It says that the age group was 9-12 but it could easily be modified to be used in elementary schools as well. http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Vocational_Education/Business/BUS0200.html |

This is a lesson plan for a project that could be used with middle school students (ages 11-14) and also, elementary students (ages 5-11). Although, it is mostly for middle school students. Students, in this project, create their own monthly budgets. They show their income and must have an imaginary job. They meet unexpected expenses along the way and must adapt their budgets. The goals are to have students prepare a monthly budget using Excel, estimate their montly bills, and have students then evaluate it all. This project uses the language arts, math, and economics curriculums. http://www.microsoft.com/Education/WaterUse.aspx |
