Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Do you have to be Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgendered to be a member of Free to Be?
A:  Definitely Not! Our club is all-inclusive. We have many members who identify as straight, queer, questioning, or who simply do not identify at all. We will never ask you to reveal your sexuality and we certainly will not assume you are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered when you walk in the door. We always welcome allies!

Q:  Can I join Free To Be if I am a graduate student?
A:  Yes! We have several current members who are graduate students.

Q:  Is it okay to say "queer"?
A:  Queer used to be a derogatory term for gays, but has recently been embraced by the GLBT community. Many prefere to use the term "queer" because it encompases a wide variety of people, whereas GLBT only encompases four parts of the gender and sexuality spectrum. In Free To Be, being queer is celebrated.

Q:  What resources does Free To Be offer?
A:  In addition to the online resources located at this website on the resources page, Free To Be has a library in its office. This library houses almost 300 books, a varity of magazines, and will soon offer videos. Members can use these resources while in the GLBTA office or they can check them out.

Q:  Is there a Free To Be listserve?
A:  There is! Our Free To Be listserve is our primary means of communication. There are over 100 people subscribed to it. It is used to announce events, speakers, meeting changes, etc to members of Free To Be. If you are interested in joining the Free To Be listserve, please e-mail free2b@uvm.edu to find out how!
