Keynote Speaker: Dean Spade, a transgender activist and attorney who received his J.D. from UCLA School of Law in May 2001. His writing has appeared in the Chicano-Latino Law Review, the Howard Scroll, the Harvard Lesbian & Gay Review, and the Berkeley Women's Law Journal. Dean is also co-editor of the on-line journal Make. (modified from SRLP)
Now in its second year, Translating Identity is a free conference focusing on gender and gender identities. Open to the public, this event hopes to reach out the University of Vermont, the Burlington community, and the nation as a whole to educate us all further about transgender issues. With multiple panels to choose from at any time, some panels will be directed towards trans people and others will be for those who are fairly unfamiliar with the transgender movement and the topic of gender identity.
This conference seeks to translate gender identity to both the queer community and its allies.
This conferece is open to the national public, but space is limited!
Please register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot.
Registration and attendance is free.
The idea for TIC was born from Free To Be, the University of Vermont's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Alliance (GLBTA), a Student Government Association (SGA) recognized club entirely run by students. In the fall of 2002, Free To Be members decided they wanted to put on a conference devoted to trans issues, in hopes they might make a difference by educating the surrounding community.
TIC's first year in April 2003 was such a hit, Free To Be decided to take another stab at putting on the conference. This year, the members are more devoted than ever and have made a concious effort to keep in mind all the comments received from last year's event. Please join us for this years wonderful conference!
