Timing and composition of meals for training and pre- and post-competition. Prerequisite: NFS 1043 or Instructor permission.
Section Description
Sports Nutrition expands upon basic nutrition concepts by exploring the unique nutritional needs of athletes. Course topics include energy requirements for resistance and endurance athletes, principles of a balanced diet, timing and composition of pre- and post-activity meals, vitamins and minerals, ergogenic aids, hydration and unique needs for various athletic groups.
Section Expectation
At the end of this course students should be able to meet the following objectives: 1. Discuss the how frequency, duration and intensity of activity influence type of fuel used by the body. 2. Describe biochemical pathways of nutrients utilized during different types of exercise. 3. Discuss the effects of ergogenic aids and their relationship to exercise and nutrition. 4. Evaluate nutritional quality in relation to athletic performance of various activities and sports. 5. Recognize how different health statuses impact nutritional needs in the context of sports and activity.
