Provides a foundation of knowledge in the field of exercise science with a primary focus on maintaining health and performance in a physically active population. Surveys the basics of physical performance development, and injury prevention and care common to physically active populations. Prerequisites: Exercise Science major, Physical Education major, or Instructor permission.

Section Description
There are no pre-requisites for enrolling in this class. Please reach out to the instructor if you are unable to register due to needing an override. This course will provide students with a foundation of knowledge in the field of exercise science with a primary focus on maintaining health and performance in a physically active population. In this introductory course, students will survey the basics of physical performance development, and injury prevention and care common to physically active populations. Instruction includes a survey of topics such as musculoskeletal anatomy, kinesiology, tissue response to injury, nutrition, protective equipment, emergency considerations, environmental concerns, mechanisms of traumatic and overuse injury, and various hot topics currently in the media, such as concussion management and consequences. Students will be introduced to various professions that practice sports medicine, including basic role delineations and scopes of practice.
Section Expectation
This summer section will be offered online in an asynchronous format. There will be instructor-lead videos to watch, sports medicine organization resources to review (such as from the NCAA, the ACSM-American College of Sports Medicine, and the NATA-National Athletic Trainers' Association), online commentary to analyze, and numerous other activities to encourage curiosity, engagement, and understanding of a survey of foundational topics related to sports medicine. Students will be expected to complete coursework regularly throughout the summer course to maintain engagement and connection with the instructor and peers.
