Section Description

This is a course about discovering the concepts and practice of Clinical and Translational Science (CTS). We will examine the results of clinical and translational research through the lens of a current health-related topic, Diabetes Millitus, from public health policy down to basic science. We will explore the value of public health interventions considering the historical development of diabetes, including the use of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1). Each student will have an opportunity to apply CTS principles to a health-related topic of their choice. This introductory course includes multiple ways to explore this topic in six weeks: written reflections on what we learn about clinical and translational research on diabetes, short (1-2 page) papers on the principles of CTS, short videos explaining how the research on diabetes translates to public health issues, and a graphic illustration of how CTS principles relate to a public health topic of interest. A core precept of this course is that communication across disciplines, hierarchies, and habits of thought is a fundamental requirement for CTS: the science of putting into action what we understand to be true about health. We will practice this skill so that, at the completion of the course, we will all be better at discussing how Clinical and Translation Science connects with public health issues using specific examples, based on the principles of CTS. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Discuss Clinical and Translational Science and Research 2. Explain examples of Clinical and Translational Research 3. Apply the principles of Clinical and Translational Science to a real-world public health issue
