Section Description
: This course examines environmental public health from a systems perspective, emphasizing how large-scale forces such as climate change, globalization, and resource systems shape health outcomes across diverse populations. The course is organized around three thematic areas: Systems Thinking in Environmental Public Health, Applied Environmental Health Practice, and Environmental Health Challenges. Topics include environmental justice, climate and health, sustainable development, One Health, food and water systems, the built environment, and populations disproportionately affected by environmental hazards. Through practice-oriented assignments and case studies, students develop skills and familiarity in spatial analysis, public health communication, and advocacy while applying web-based tools to analyze and communicate environmental health data. The course culminates in an interdisciplinary Flint Water Crisis case study, in which students collaborate with external experts from multiple professions to develop an evidence-informed child health improvement program that integrates environmental public health principles with real-world practice. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify systems-level environmental factors that influence health, recognize populations at increased risk from environmental exposures, evaluate sustainable strategies that promote health while reducing environmental harms, explain the interconnected relationships among human, animal, and ecosystem health within broader social and ecological systems, and communicate evidence-based environmental health arguments that support equitable public health practice.
Section Expectation
This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class per University policy regarding work required for a three-credit hour course.
Evaluation
Grades are based on discussion participation, quizzes, and written assignments including a final case study.
