Section Description

This course will address the application of ecology to the management of wildlife populations and habitats. We will consider the attitudes of humans toward wildlife and their demands and impacts on North America's wildlife resources. A central theme throughout the course is the tension between the biological and social carrying capacities. Selected wildlife species will be studied to illustrate harvest strategies for game species, control of nuisance species, and the management of endangered and other nongame species. We will discuss case histories and current issues of wildlife management on public and private lands. This course is a traditional lecture course but will allow opportunities for dialogue around challenging wildlife management topics. You will write an applied management paper that synthesizes the biological, social, political, and economic factors affecting the management of a species of your choosing. This technical paper assignment will enable you to really dig in to the issues that wildlife managers face with respect to mismatches between social and biological carrying capacity.
