Section Description
This internship in alpine ecology will provide an immersive, hands-on experience in working in biodiversity conservation and science outreach, focused on the unique high-elevation communities of plants that occur on the highest peaks in the Northeastern US. There will be two hosts of this year's internships: The Green Mountain Club (GMC) located in VT and the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) located in NH. Both of these are non-profit organizations dedicated to conservation, stewardship, and public outreach around the importance of mountain and alpine ecosystems in the northeastern Appalachians. Interns will work with the GMC or AMC conservation teams on a variety of conservation projects. Depending on the organization, examples of activities include data collection on photopoint monitoring of habitat change, air and water quality, pollinators, plant phenology and other activities. Interns will also practice science communication through engaging with the public on alpine conservation and the delivery of outreach presentations on different conservation topics to the public. The location of the GMC internship will be northern VT (activities centered on Mt Mansfield, Camels Hump, and nearby high elevation areas) with residence either locally in the Burlington area (not provided) or the possibility of remote accommodations near the work sites (provided: huts, backcountry camping) in coordination with GMC staff. The location of the AMC internship will be at AMC facilities in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (either Pinkham Notch base facility or the backcountry Lakes of the Clouds hut). Interns with GMC will receive a modest stipend to support living expenses, while the AMC interns will receive on-site housing and meals in lieu of a stipend. The length of the internship is approximately mid-May to mid-August.
Evaluation
Assessment will be based on reflective journal entries at different time points during the summer along with a final presentation to the GMC/AMC mentors and the UVM faculty instructor.
