Section Description

This is a one-semester, introductory course in organic chemistry. *This is the same course as CHEM 1580, minus the lab. Therefore, this is a 3.00 credit course and CHEM 1580 is a 4.00 credit course (please enroll in the course that suits your curriculum).* Topics in this course include bonding, hybridization, resonance theory, isomerism, conformations of cyclic and acyclic alkanes, stereoisomerism, chirality, optical properties of stereoisomers, and implications for living organisms. In terms of functional group chemistry, the course covers, nomenclature, reactions of and ways to synthesize alkenes, alkynes, arenes, halo alkanes, alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, acid chlorides, anhydrides and amines as well as the corresponding mechanisms for these reactions. Required Lecture Material: ALEKS 360; McGraw Hill (18 week access) *ALEKS 360 comes with the etext (Smith; Organic Chemistry; 7th edition)
