Properties and reactivity of basic organic compounds of technological and biological significance. Not recommended for pre-medical students. Credit not awarded for both CHEM 1580 and CHEM 1150, CHEM 1152, CHEM 1582, CHEM 1500, or CHEM 2580. Prerequisite: CHEM 1100 or CHEM 1450.

Section Description
This is a one-semester, introductory course in organic chemistry. Topics include bonding, hybridization, resonance theory, isomerism, conformations of cyclic and acyclic alkanes, stereoisomerism, chirality, optical properties of stereoisomers, and implications for living organisms. In terms of functional group chemistry, the course covers, nomenclature, reactions of and ways to synthesize alkenes, alkynes, arenes, halo alkanes, alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, acid chlorides, anhydrides and amines as well as the corresponding mechanisms for these reactions. Required Lecture Material: ALEKS 360; McGraw Hill (18 week access) *ALEKS 360 comes with the etext (Smith; Organic Chemistry; 7th edition)
Section Expectation
All labs must be completed in order to pass the course. Attendance for all lectures and exams is expected. All work must be completed by the due date. The final exam must be taken to pass the course.
Evaluation
Students are evaluated based upon their performance on mid semester exams, a final exam, laboratory work, and homework quizzes.
