Section Description

This class is intended to develop a student’s abilities and knowledge in drawing while expanding their artistic understanding of form and meaning. Work will come largely out of a rigorous direct observational approach. We will consistently relate back to four key considerations: line quality, composition, proportion & perspective, and form & space. The process of translating the 3D world into flat drawing is always abstract, and these recurring themes are major elements in that abstraction process. This drawing class should ultimately change the way students think visually, and how they see. Beyond this conceptual and philosophical framework, specific practices learned will include: *summary form and big-to-small process *organizing lines and sight measuring *geometric volume/planar analysis *searching line and gesture *contour and cross-contour line *hatching and cross-hatching *observational and aerial perspective *toning and subtractive process *composite form combined methods

Section Expectation

Drawing is a physical and mental act, therefore energy and concentration in drawing activities and assignments will be required. We will have new drawing assignments in class daily. There will also be slide shows and online video instructions associated with homework assignments. Expect to spend more than four hours working outside of class each week. Homework drawings will be due one week from when they are assigned unless specifically stated otherwise.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on quality and quantity of work, and overall improvement. Quality of work will be assessed based on methods and ideas taught as well as personal experimentation and vision.
