Colorado Student News Service Brings Quality Reporting to Underserved Communities

The Colorado Student News Service is a class directed by Potter pairing students with newsrooms in underserved and rural communities throughout the state. Since its inception in January of this year, the class has begun to relieve some of the pressures faced by local newsrooms while offering students valuable hands-on experience in the journalism field. This semester, 10 students are each paired with a different paper; Potter hopes to facilitate more partnerships as the program continues.

CUNY School Offers an Outlet for Students, and the City

There are roughly 200 students enrolled in the journalism school at any given time, Hester said. The program typically lasts three semesters, and they graduate with a master's degree in either journalism or engagement journalism — a newer program developed in 2015 which focuses on engaging audiences and growing journalism, according to the website.

Bloomfield’s Journalism Courses Create Hands-On Reporting Experience

The goal of the program is not only to provide hands-on reporting experience for students interested in media careers, but also to fill crucial gaps in local reporting. Students report for Essex News Daily, which serves as Bloomfield College's local media partner. Torreano’s Media Communications classes allows for more flexibility than a traditional extracurricular internship, and still provides the opportunity to be published with a local newspaper.
