Our Space

Body

The Mosaic Center for Students of Color is a home away from home both, literally and figuratively! We're located on the first floor of Living and Learning Building E and our space includes:

  • An open lounge space for meetups, studying, or just hanging out
  • Small group meeting spaces
  • A classroom
  • A full kitchen with dining tables
  • Food pantry
  • Access to computers and printers

Accessibility

Body

The MCSC strives to develop events, programs, education, and services that are accessible to all people. Whenever possible, we utilize campus locations with wheelchair accessible doorways, wheelchair accessible bathrooms, gender inclusive bathrooms, and elevators. We are happy to provide ASL interpretation at events and programs as requested, and we include captions on all videos. We aim to provide food that is accessible to people with a broad range of dietary restrictions, and we are intentional to provide information about ingredients. If you ever need additional accommodations to ensure your full participation, email us (mcsc@uvm.edu).

MCSC's front door is wheelchair accessible with path access on the front and back doors (both on the Living and Learning East pathway). The pathways are not steep and are maintained on a regular basis.

There are two wheelchair accessible, gender inclusive bathrooms within our Center space.

Animal Policy

Body

The MCSC strives to be a welcoming space. When convening in a public space we know that many community members cannot tolerate certain animals for a variety of reasons including allergies, religious beliefs, and traumatic experiences.

As a result, below please find our policy regarding animals in the MCSC:

  • Only service animals are allowed to be in the space.
  • Your animal needs to be wearing its service vest and be on a short leash at all times so the community knows that the dog is on duty.
  • Therapy and emotional support animals are not allowed in the space.

If you have further questions about Animal Policies at the MCSC, email us (mscs@uvm.edu).

History

Body

The Mosaic Center for Students of Color was established as The Minority Student Program in 1973. Three years later, in 1976, The Minority Student Program was renamed  The Center for Cultural Pluralism to reflect a change in the mission statement.

Office of Multicultural Affairs

  • In 1993, The Office of Multicultural Affairs emerged from The Center for Cultural Pluralism.
  • The Office of Multicultural Affairs focused on the retention of students of color, while The Center for Cultural Pluralism aimed to educate faculty, staff, and students on how to be better allies to marginalized communities.

Asian, Latinx, African and Native American (ALANA) Student Center

  • Five years later, after the Waterman Takeover in 1998, The Office of Multicultural Affairs became The ALANA Student Center. ALANA was a regional acronym that stood for Asian, Latino, Native and African American.
  • In 2016, The ALANA Student Center moved to a central location in Living/Learning on Athletic Campus. This is when the name changed to The Mosaic Center for Students of Color (MCSC).
  • The name Mosaic was selected after an extensive campus process and clearly indicated the community the MCSC sought to serve.
