Kavita Shah & Cape Verdean Blues
Acclaimed jazz vocalist Kavita Shah brings us her ¿love letter to Cesária Évora¿s breathtaking archipelago¿ of the Cape Verde islands. Accompanied by Évora¿s long-time collaborators, guitarist Rufino Almeida (aka ¿Bau¿) and percussionist Miroca Paris, Shah sings traditional mornas and coladeiras; songs of love and loss that are unique to the islands. The trio began their collaboration in 2016, but this is their first extensive U.S. tour. Bau, whose luthier father taught him how to play and build guitars, cavaquinhos, and violins, performed for many years with Évora and served as her musical director before moving on to his own projects. His composition, ¿Raquel,¿ was notably featured by Spanish director Pedro Almódovar in his 2002 film, Talk to Her. It is an extraordinary honor to present this exceptional vocalist with two of the leading lights of Cape Verdean traditional music.
