This toolkit—An Employer Guide to Substance Misuse—is designed to support employers in promoting healthy, safe workplaces by destigmatizing conversations about substance misuse, offering guidance in how to address it, and developing practices that focus on prevention. It was created by the United Way of Northwest Vermont in collaboration with a workgroup made up of Vermont employers and community organizations focused on substance misuse prevention and recovery.
Most employers see the impacts of substance misuse in the workplace just as we all do in our communities and are well aware of the issue. The toolkit is a way to share learning, begin conversations, and provide guidance and resources. Organized into six sections — culture, laws, policy, prevention, intervention, and recovery — the toolkit emphasizes understanding substance misuse as part of a continuum that can lead to dependency, significantly affecting individuals and employers.
