Building Capacity across Vermont for High-Quality Mathematics Instruction

VMI in Little Rock, Arkansas

The Little Rock School district has adopted VMI for its main mathematics professional development for their math coaches in the district. The District’s plan is to use VMI as the content vehicle to train the math coaches in the 32

Elementary Schools 7 Middle Schools and 5 High Schools. In the VMI courses, for which they receive graduate credit from the University of Vermont, the math coaches are building their content knowledge and their understanding of how

the content connects vertically in the curriculum. Following each content course, the District’s Mathematics Supervisors conducts planning sessions to transfer the content into classroom teaching. These sessions also reinforce the teacher’s

knowledge of the content. If they so choose, teachers can count their course credits toward a Master of Science Degree from the University of Vermont.

“The professional partnership with VMI has been tremendously successful. It has produced dramatic increases in our math coaches’ content knowledge and pedagogy.” -Little Rock School District Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services
