Introduction to the Index

This index includes VAS Newsletters and "Special Number" issues for the 24-year period from June 1968 to April 1992 (68 issues).  Monogrpahs and other publications of the VAS have not been included.  The June 1968 issue was the very first VAS Newsletter.  It was more of an announcement than a Newsletter and had no initial identification numbers other than its date of publication, but it was definitely identified as being a Newsletter.

Some index subjects are generalizations.  For example. "Burial" will also be indexed for a page of Boucher site information even though the word "burial" does not appear in the article.  Titles of some articles have been modified so as to better alpabetize them according to their subject material (e.g., "Minutes of Annual Business Meeting" is listed "Annual Business Meeting; Minutes of").  Trustee information is listed under both "Trustees" and "Board" as applicable.

Names of people directly or indirectly associated with the VAS, Vermont, and Vermont history are indexed; however, unassociated names, such as authors of reviewed books (who are neither VAS nor Vermont-associated) are not.

Counties are listed for specific references to that county.  Bodies of water have been grouped under headings only: see bays, creeks, lakes, ponds, and rivers.

Books reviewed or reported in the Newsletters are included under "Book reviews."  Reports and announcements of annual spring and fall meetings are listed under "Annual Meetings" although some related articles will appear under different listings.

Individuals in lists of members (membership lists) are not indexed; however, membership lists themselves are indexed under "Membership list."

The Newsletters underwent a number of publication number and identification changes starting with numbers 1 through 10, to "Special Numbers" (April and September 1974), to Volumes II through V, then to dates only (May and September 1978), and finally back to numbers 26 through 69.  Issues also have been identified by months and by seasons.  There have been two double issues: 44/45 (July/September 1983) and 54/55 (Winter 1986/87).  The Newsletter masthead also changed, starting with "VAS NEWSLETTER", then "Vermont Archaeological Society NEWSLETTER" followed by "Newsletter" immediately preceeded by the Society's circular Colchester pot logo, then "VAS newsletter" (lowercase "n"), "VAS Newsletter" (uppercase "N", and finally, issue 69 started "VERMONT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER".  Furthermore, the initial issue of June 1968 was not numbered, issue 52 of February 1988 was identified 51 on the inside pages, issue 65 of January 1991 was mis-dated January 1990, and issue 68 of January 1992 was misnumbered issue 86.  Newsletters have been printed one- and two-sided, on plain white or bright colored paper, and have been produced center stapled, corner stapled, or with fold-out pages.

In order to present a consistent issue/page format for this Index, the following system was adopted:
               1.  The initial June 1968 Newsletter is identified "X"
               2.  Special Number issues April and September 1974 are identified 10 and 11
               3.  Issue 10 of November 1974 is identified 12
               4.  All remaining Newsletters starting with Vol. II Issue 1 are identified 13 through 69

Geographic locations outside Vermont are identified by state, province, or country.  Some uncommon acronyms have been spelled out in article titles to avoid confusion.  Definition of acronyms found in the Newsletters are listed on pages 4 and 5.

Attention to capitalization will avoid some confusions: e.g., "Clochester point" (lithic) versus "Colchester Point" (geographic).  The shorter "archeology" is used where not specifically spelled otherwise.  Except for article or subject titles, "VAS" and "UVM" are not listed in the Index due to their common use throughout all the Newsletters.

The following cross references issue numbers in this Index to original issue identifications:

Page number identifications in the Index take on the form of issue number:page number.  For example:

  •      X:1                         is June 1968 issue, page 1
  •     19:4,5                      is Volume III Issue III Fall 1976, pages 4 and 5
  •     28:1-3                      is issue 28, pages 1 through 3
Starting with issue 39, the name of the Newsletter editor was printed on the title page.  But to determine who produced Newsletters before that took some detective work and reading between the lines.  As best as can be determined, therefore, the following are the editors of record to date:

I have corrected spelling errors where they have been obvious and hope that in the process I have not introduced others.  If I have misspelled your name or mangled your article title beyond recognition, my apologies to you.  But please notify me so that I can correct the master file for any future printing.

Thank you Prudence Doherty, Muriel Farrington, and Joseph Popecki for providing me with back issues of Newsletters.
