Miscellaneous Information
THE PRESERVATION INSTITUTE AND HISTORIC WINDSOR, INC.
The Preservation Institute is a division of Historic Windsor, Inc. (HWI).
HWI was formed in 1971 when a group of citizens joined together to prevent
the demolition of Windsor House which continues to be our headquarters
26 years later. HWI established the Vermont State Craft Center at Windsor
House (now independently managed) in 1975 and the Preservation Institute
in 1982. The Institute has served more than 2,000 students in more than
100 workshops since its inception. In 1987, the Asher Benjamin Architectural
Model, a traveling teaching tool for schools, museums, and historic sites
was launched. HWI has published an Architectural Walking Tour of Windsor,
Vermont, and Accessibility and Historic Preservation: A Resource Guide.
Membership provides financial support and volunteer assistance for programs
and fundraising events. It entitles members to discounts on all educational
programs and many special events and tours. A newsletter is published periodically.
To join or renew your annual membership, please see the registration form.
Thank you.
Preservation Institute students have the OPTION of enrolling in a program
of study leading to a Certificate in Preservation Skills and Technology.
This program of study can be completed in as little as two years or as
long as five. It is designed to give enrollees the option of pursuing a
certificate that documents knowledge and skills obtained by taking eight
required workshops and five electives and designing and executing a community
service preservation project under the direction of a mentor. This certificate
program is offered in cooperation with the Norwich University Division
of Architecture and Art, Northfield, Vermont.
