When most people think of historic architecture, buildings like Thomas
Jefferson's Monticello, or sites such as Colonial Willamsburg often come
to mind. In Vermont, buildings like the Follett House, overlooking Burlington
Bay and Lake Champlain, the State House in Montpelier, or Robert Todd Lincoln's
Hildene in Manchester, conjure up these same images. While these buildings
and sites are in fact historic, and are very good examples of high style
architecture, it is important to remember the hundreds and thousands of
buildings which may not all be high style examples, are indeed historic.
The countless Federal, Greek Revival and Gothic Revival style structures
that form so many villages and town centers around our state, should not
be forgotten.
