Springfield Downtown Historic District

The Black River falls a total of 110 feet in the space of an eighth of a mile, providing power for many 18th- and early 19th-century industries. Today, Springfield continues as a manufacturing center with a concentration of machine tool companies. A bridge in the center of downtown offers a good view of the river's power.
