In the mid-19th century, Brattleboro became nationally recognized as an extraordinary summer resort. The discovery of pure springs along the Whetstone Brook as a "water-cure" attracted a wealthy clientele from throughout the country. Later, the Estey Organ Company became the largest organ manufacturer in the nation. The cultural, commercial, and industrial center of southeastern Vermont, Brattleboro has buildings from the Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic, Second Empire, Commercial, and Modernistic styles.
