Vermont Heritage Network: Historic Architecture

Mad River Valley Rural Historic District

The rural district stretches for four miles along the Mad River and scenic Route 100 between the villages of Moretown and Waitsfield. Its open fields and well-preserved farmsteads clearly reflect the agricultural history of Vermont. Many houses date from the early to mid-1800s and are complemented by a wealth of late 19th-century barns. These barns, state of art at the time, may have been built as a result of the educational efforts of the Mad River Valley Agricultural Society, founded in 1872.
